Birthday Extravaganza – Day 3
This post has been sorted into "Birthday Extravaganza" • 11 Comments

During the summer of my 21st birthday I was living in a flat overlooking the River Liffey in Dublin Ireland.  The view was the only good thing about that flat, LOL!  My three months in Ireland were supposed to be part of a working holiday between my third and fourth year of college.  Unfortunately, I debarked the plane at Dublin Airport only to discover that the job offer had evaporated like smoke on the wind.  Speaking of smoke, the small dorm size fridge in my flat began puffing out black, oily smoke upon my second day in Dublin.  This did not bode well for my summer abroad.  I should have payed attention to these ill omens and phoned home for help, but I was determined to make the best of my Dublin adventure.

I came up with a plan to make my meager funds last the summer.  I pounded the city pavement in my doc martens boots, the goth American girl looking for odd jobs and cheap food.  I found a market across town that sold huge blocks of curry ramen and lugged them back to my flat.  I also filled in as a nanny and literally worked for food.  One night while walking back across the Liffey I was mugged, or rather it was an attempted mugging.  A thin, wiry man materialized out of the shadows and demanded my wallet, but when he could see I had no money we struck up a conversation.  The experience was surreal.  He had assumed that an American would have money, but when I explained my lack of finances (and luck) he became friendly and even tried to suggest a place where I could get a bite to eat.

When my 21st birthday arrived at the end of August, I was ready to return home.  I was tired, hungry and in need of a working shower.  The return flight home was the best gift ever.  My 21st birthday was celebrated with a hot bath, a warm meal, and an entire day of rest.  Though this may have been the most boring 21st birthday in all of history, I wouldn’t change a thing.
